Instructions:
1)Print Shapes Templates onto Cardstock  2) Cut out 3) Trace Templates onto Craft Felt 4) Cut shapes out of Craft Felt 5)Sew two layers, same shape, together so that the finished product is two sheets of felt sewn together in the desired shape. Optional to use a batting of layer in between.

Quick sewing suggestion: Use two different colors for front and back.
Optional: Stack 2,3,4 sheets of craft felt together at the same time. Using a good pair of newly sharpened scissors, cut the shape out at one time. This way, with the extra felt pieces can be used for other purposes later on, or for a matching game.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, if you read my last few posts, here I go again!

I made these shapes for her second birthday. We play chase carrying her geometric shape and we say, “Grrrr give me back my Green Tree!”. Upon Capture, a good old fashioned tickling is in store. As she got better with her shapes, I would point at the Geometric Shape Poster I created, my inspiration for this idea, and ask her to get the one I was pointing at. Then, and only then, would I chase her.

Now, that we have reached 3, we have progressed to shape matching. We matched the circle to the doorknob, the drum. The rectangle to the door. When she is in the mood, she takes pictures of her finds.

Lastly, we have added hop scotching across the shapes. Why Not?

  1. This is a great idea! I hope you don’t mind that I shared it.

    • I am honored that you shared it! Learning doesn’t have to be pen and paper. And, “homeschooling” can start from day one. If you go the tactile route like me, both parents can play.

I “regulate” the toys my child gets. I go so far as to send a list to family members and friends. I have donated to thrift stores her “gifts” the very next day if they weren’t approved. No mind-numbing electronic toys, unless it requires her to work and to use her imagination, then it is out the door.

So, learning toys can be fun. We, her parents, make them fun when we chase her to get them.

the difference between this and store bought toys, it actually requires that her parents play with her. We don’t mind that at all! It is better than sitting on the couch and watching TV.

      • My husband and I have some pretty tight rules about toys, as well. Those horrible things that read for a child are completely banned, as is anything that resembles a smartphone or tablet computer. We allow electronic alphabet toys, but honestly, our gang would rather be writing giant letters on our fence with sidewalk chalk. One of our favorite games is chalking the entire alphabet on the fence, along with shapes and numbers, then someone stands in the middle and calls of a shape, a letter,or a number. Everyone races off to find whatever’s been called, and the first one to find it gets to call of the next thing. We’re working our way up to words with that one.

Actually, I was tremendously proud of my oldest daughter last year; a well-intentioned but very disrespectful relative gave her a Barbie doll. Banned toys list. She opened the gift, gave the giver a huge hugand a warm thank you, then gently said, “Some little child who has no toys will really appreciate this.” Then she handed it to me and went off to play with the rest of her toys.
